An Example of Reagan's Personality - even in his mid 70s.
The following is an amusing letter from former President Ronald Reagan in to a 13-year-old boy's request for disaster relief funds to clean up his room. Seventh-grader Andy Smith from Irmo, South Carolina, wrote Reagan in 1984: "Today my mother declared my bedroom a disaster area. I would like to request federal funds to hire a crew to clean up my room."
The 74 year old Reagan's reply is as follows...
Dear Andy:
I'm sorry to be so late in answering your letter but as you know I've been in China and found your letter here upon my return. Your application for disaster relief has been duly noted but I must point out one technical problem; the authority declaring the disaster is supposed to make the request. In this case your mother.
However setting that aside I'll have to point out the larger problem of available funds. This has been a year of disasters, 539 hurricanes as of May 4th and several more since, numerous floods, forest fires, drought in Texas and a number of earthquakes. What I'm getting at is that funds are dangerously low.
May I make a suggestion? This administration, believing that government has done many things that could better be done by volunteers at the local level, has sponsored a Private Sector Initiative program, calling upon people to practice voluntarism in the solving of a number of local problems.
Your situation appears to be a natural. I'm sure your mother was fully justified in proclaiming your room a disaster. Therefore you are in an excellent position to launch another volunteer program to go along with the more than 3,000 already underway in our nation—congratulations.
Give my best regards to your mother.
Sincerely,
Ronald Reagan

Star Wars and the End of the Cold War
Reagan's 1983 "Evil Empire" speech sets the tone for a more aggressive US posture against the Soviet Union, and the costly arms race is renewed. He hopes that space-based anti-missile systems (the Strategic Defense Initiative - better known as Star Wars) could make nuclear weapons obsolete. Gorbachev assumes power in the Soviet Union, setting to reform the Soviet economy and encourage greater openness. He bonds well with both Reagan and Margaret Thatcher, but the SDI issue prevents arms control agreements from being made right away. The weakness of the Soviet system is revealed by the Chernobyl disaster and Mathias Rust's Red Square stunt. Knowing the Soviet Union could not compete with SDI without the economic welfare of its people being cut even more than it already been, Gorbachev eventually agrees to a landmark agreement that calls for a reduction in nuclear weapons between the 2 superpowers and is seen as the beginning of the end of the Cold War.
We probably won't watch the entire 45 minute clip, but I will likely show segments of it.
The part from 2:34 - 11:42 (Reagan escalating tension between the 2 countries, life in the Soviet Union in the 1980s, the beginning of Gorbachev's career, Reagan's cartoon portrayal as a war monger, and a description of Star Wars), goes with Section 2.
The parts from 21:30 - 23:13 (Gorbachev becoming head of the Soviet Union and the introduction of perestroika/glasnost), 26:35 - 28:33 (the 1st unsuccessful meeting between Reagan/Gorbachev), 31:22 - 35:20 (the 2nd unsuccessful meeting), 38:48 - 40:45 (more glasnost and perestroika), and the last 5 minutes of the video with Gorbachev in America for the first time and the signing of the arms reduction treaty all go with Section 4.
