The Commonwealth of Independent States (the former Soviet Union)
The map above shows the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) shortly after it was organized in 1991. The former Soviet Union consisted of the 12 areas colored on the map + 3 countries not colored in the Northwest part(Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania) that wanted no part of being associated with the Commonwealth from the start and became independent countries. The map above lists Georgia as a member, but in 2009 it decided it didn't want to be part of it anymore. 2 of the other colored countries (Ukraine and Turkmenistan) are not official members, but generally are considered to be part of the group.
The major purpose of the CIS is to coordinate trade, lawmaking, security (military and nuclear weapon cooperation), and coordinate crime prevention throughout the region.
