The Hydrogen Bomb
The first successful detonation of the Hydrogren Bomb by the U.S. took place on November 1st, 1952 over a tiny island in the South Pacific. It produced a fireball more than 3 miles across and a mushroom cloud that reached 40,000 feet high 10 minutes after its detonation. The Soviet Union developed the capability to detonate such a device less than a year later. Only 6 countries are currently considered certain to have the capability to build their own nuclear weapon (U.S., Russia, Great Britain, France, China, and India). There are other countries that have conducted some level of testing (Pakistan, North Korea, Iran) or have access to weapons due to one of the 6 countries "sharing" weapons in their country ( including Israel, Germany, Italy, and Turkey) for strategic defense purposes.
Sputnik
Mohammed Mossadegh
Mohammed Mossadegh was the Iranian Prime Minister from 1951 - 1953. His attempt to nationalize Iran's oil fields triggered actions by British and American intelligence (the newly established CIA) to remove him from power. For a more detailed account of his life, the actions that led to his removal, and a better understanding of the origin of a lot of hatred towards the U.S. by the Iranian people, click on the link below and watch the 2 videos.

The Suez Crisis (1956)
This 4 minute clip condenses information about the Suez Crisis. I will likely show this in class
This 10 minute clip was created by a High School student and explains the Suez Crisis in greater detail. It will discuss the origin of the Suez Canal, the original lease agreement (supposed to be 99 years), competition for Middle Eastern influence after WWII by the U.S. and Soviet Union, the election of Gamal Abdel Nasser as President of Egypt and his vision of unifying the Middle East into an area that would not be forcibly influenced by any outside forces, his plans to build a dam to help the Egyptian people out, Western Nations refusal to help pay for the dam because of his associations with Communism, Nasser's attempt to nationalize the Suez Canal which resulted in breaking the original lease agreement, the conflict itself and diplomacy (through the United Nations) that occurs as a result, and the consequences of the incident. I will likely not show this entire clip in class

Sputnik
This is a model of Sputnik I, the first man-made satellite to orbit the Earth. It was launched by the Soviet Union in 1957 and had great significance.
1. It indicated that the USSR had become (at least temporarily) the world leader in science and engineering.
2. It was a great propaganda achievement, enabling the nation's leaders to claim both scientific preeminence and
the superiority of the Soviet social system.
3. Sputnik also triggered the space race, as the United States and the USSR spent an astronomical amount of
money, time, and resounces on attempting to be the first in a series of other space related events. The USSR
followed Sputnik with several other achievements including the first living creature in space (Sputnk 2... a dog), the
first person in space (Yuri Gagarin), and the first space walk.
4. Finally, Sputnik was extremely important to the Soviet people. It demonstrated to them that after years of sacrifice
under Stalin and Khruschev, the nation was truly on the road to communism based on the achievements of
science. People gathered in the evenings to track Sputnik through the sky, using binoculars or amateur radios to
pick up its signal.
Basically... it was a really big deal.
