The Main Objective of Chapter 22 is for students to understand the military and political events of the Vietnam War in Southeast Asia and its impact on life in the United States.
By the end of this chapter, students should be able to:
1. Summarize Vietnam’s history as a French colony and its struggle for independence.
2. Explain how the U.S. 1st became involved in the Vietnam conflict.
3. Describe and explain the reasons for expansion of U.S. military involvement in Vietnam under President Johnson
4. Describe the military tactics, effectiveness, and weapons used during the war by U.S. forces, the North and South Vietnamese Army, and the Vietcong.
5. Explain the draft policies of the U.S. during the war.
6. Trace the origins of the anti-war movement and describe how it gradually divided U.S. public opinion about the war.
7. Explain the domestic turbulence (MLK Jr. and Bobby Kennedy killed, Race Riots, Democrat Convention problems) of 1968 and the impact it had on the Presidential Election.
8. Describe Nixon’s policy of Vietnamization.
9. Describe the end of U.S. involvement and the final outcome in Vietnam.
10. Summarize how the Vietnam War is remembered in the U.S. and Southeast Asia.

This 5 and a half minute clip covers content from the entire chapter. I plan on showing this immediately before giving the test for the chapter... but it would probably be beneficial for you to watch this on your own at least once at home. A whole bunch of information that will be on the test is packed into this clip.

The Century - Unpinned (44 minutes)
These 3 videos link together a lot of the material from Chapters 20 - 23. It includes information about Lyndon Johnson's Presidency, the Civil Rights Movement, the Vietnam War, and pop culture stuff. It will likely be shown in class at some point during this chapter (since most of the content deal with Vietnam) and accompanied with guided questions for students to answer.

To summarize... Vietnam only legally allows one political party to exist... the Communist Party.
It has 3 branches of government (like the U.S.) and a constitution. There are elections held throughout the country every 5 years for a 500 member, one house (not 2 houses... like the U.S. with a Senate and House of Reps) legislative branch of government. The legislature elects leaders to the executive branch (including a president), while members of the judicial branch are all appointed by either the executive or legislative branch. There are elections for local government officials as well.
