Gerald Ford
The 3 minute 45 second clip above discusses the brief presidency of Gerald Ford. It focuses on his personality and the major issue facing his presidency... what to do about Richard Nixon and the evidence that suggested his involvement in the Watergate Cover-up. His decision was to pardon Nixon. The last 2 minutes of the video involve the fall of Saigon and South Vietnam eventually becoming Communist. Ford wanted to try to help out the South by providing aide, but Congress said no. Those 2 events (Nixon's Pardon and South Vietnam falling to the Communists) doomed his chances of getting elected to a full term in office.
Jimmy Carter
This video is about 12 minutes and focus on Jimmy Carter. It begins with a minute and a half discussion of his campaign for the 1976 election (how he came out of nowhere, some campaign commercials). The next 2 and a half minutes discusses his inauguration, a brief discussion of his background and family, and him being an outsider when it came to politics in Washington DC. Beginning at around the 4 minute mark, it discusses the Camp David Accords for roughly 3 minutes. At around the 7 minute mark, it discusses the struggling U.S. economy, gas crisis, and his Malaise speech for around a minute and a half. The 8 and a half minute mark discusses the Iran Hostage Crisis before the 1980 election. The rest of the video discusses the transition of power from Carter to Reagan, his influence in getting the Hostages eventually released after 444 days, and his life after the presidency.
Camp David Accords
This 4 minute 15 second clip summarizes problems that existed throughout much of the Middle East in 1978 (Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, Egypt) and the resulting Camp David Accords.
Iran Hostage Crisis
This 2 and a half minute clip details the history behind the Iran Hostage Crisis and shows footage of the event itself.
The Iranian Revolution causes another gas shortage and even higher prices
2 minute long video. Really well done. http://www.cnn.com/videos/tv/2015/07/13/seventies-energy-crisis.cnn
In 1979 a 2nd oil crisis in the United States began following the Iranian Revolution. The Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi (who had been in power since the mid 1950s following the CIA assisting him in removing Mohamed Mossadegh from power... remember... from Chapter 18?), fled his country in early 1979 and the Ayatollah Khomeini soon became the new leader of Iran. Protests towards the U.S. severely disrupted the Iranian oil sector, with production being greatly reduced and exports suspended. When oil exports were later resumed under the new regime, they were inconsistent and at a lower volume, which pushed prices up. The overall loss in production through OPEC was only about 4 percent, but a widespread panic resulted. U.S. President Jimmy Carter's decision to not accept any oil from Iran due to the Hostage situation (he didn't want U.S. $$$ going to support a country that was keeping U.S. citizens against their will) also contributed to the panic. The price per barrel of oil skyrocketed far higher than would be expected under normal circumstances. Long lines once again appeared at gas stations just as they did in 1973. These lines and high prices were common throughout most of 1980 as the Hostage Crisis continued, with things not returning to normal until early 1981 after the hostages were released and the U.S. began getting oil from many other places around the world (and from within their own borders).
Intro from the movie Argo
This 2 minute clip does a good job explaining the history behind what led up to the hostage crisis itself. It is from the movie Argo, which won the Academy Award for best film in 2012.
The Seventies - State of the Union
Begins with Ford pardoning Nixon. Ends with Reagan defeating Carter. Some good stuff here. No questions for this one, but will show bits and pieces in class... especially the part from 1:49 to 5:45 about Ford granting Nixon a pardon, from 17:50 to 22:00 about the Camp David Accords, and 29:00 to 32:30 about the Iran Hostage Crisis
