Women in the Progressive Era
The status of women was changing rapidly in the Progressive Era. For the most part, middle and upper class white married women still did not work outside the home. Women workers were primarily young and single, or widows, divorcees, poor married women, and/or women of color. In addition, most women continued to work in agriculture, in factories, and as domestic servants. African American women, in particular, worked as domestic servants in large numbers.

The Women's Suffrage Movement
The National Women Suffrage Association (NWSA) was formed shortly after the Civil War (1869) to attempt to give women the right to vote. Many women were angered that African - American men, previously enslaved, all of a sudden had the right to cast a ballot in an election (the 15th Amendment) but they did not.
Women used a variety of tactics while attempting to gain suffrage in a society where leadership was dominated by men unwilling to give up their power. Political maneuvering and organized demonstrations will be discussed in class during my notes and with a movie (Iron Jawed Angels... which is in the clip below) that we will see at some point during the semester.
It took around 50 years (the 19th Amendment) for women to finally gain national suffrage.
you will see a map similar to this one on the test with multiple choice questions that accompany it.

The above clip is a trailer for the film Iron Jawed Angels. We may watch the entire movie at some point during class. To watch the entire movie on your own, go here and here You will have to click on each of the 10 minute clips in succession to view the whole thing. Unfortunately... there is an annoying watermark in the middle of each video.
