Images of the Great Depression
During the 1930's droughts devastated the United States Great Plains region. In addition, farmers had really destroyed the land's ability to be able to grow anything due to overproduction during the past 15 years. This left the top layer of soil very loose. When the winds picked up, the result was a duststorm like the one picture above.
This photograph was taken by Dorothea Lange and is titled "Migrant Mother". Your textbook has much more information about it on page 497. The image symbolizes a rural mother with her children that has been forced off of her land due to the duststorms and relocated to another part of the country, live in temporary structures like tents, and work the land for very low pay with not much hope for the future.
