Chapter 20 Highlights
This chapter covers the 1960s presidencies of John Fitzgerald Kennedy (JFK - on the right in the picture above) and Lyndon Baines Johnson (LBJ - on the left in the picture above). It doesn't discuss much of the Civil Rights Movement that occurs during this time (that will be covered in Chpt. 21) or the expansion of conflict in Vietnam (that will be covered in Chpt. 22).
The Main Objective of Chapter 20 is for students to understand the achievements and challenges that occurred during JFK’s and LBJ’s administrations during the 1960s
By the end of this chapter, students should be able to:
1. Identify factors that led to Kennedy winning the 1960 Presidential Election.
2. Describe how Kennedy’s military policy (flexible response) was different than Eisenhower’s (New Look).
3. Summarize what occurred in Cuba (the history, Bay of Pigs, Cuban Missile Crisis).
4. Explain why the Berlin Wall was built.
5. Summarize Kennedy’s New Frontier domestic and foreign agendas.
6. Describe the events surrounding JFK’s assassination.
7. Explain why Johnson was able to get legislation put into effect for many of the same things JFK wanted to do, but was unable to get support for.
8. Summarize the main goals of LBJ’s Great Society.
9. Identify the main reforms of the Warren Court in the 1960s.
