Woodrow Wilson (in office from 1913 - 1921)
Woodrow Wilson won the Presidential Election of 1912 campaigning on his New Freedom platform. The 3 main points that it consisted of were:
1. Reducing tariffs (taxes on imports)
- succeeded with the Underwood Act (reduced some tariffs by 50%)
- made U.S. popular place for foreign companies to do business.
- the increased competition with U.S. companies improved quality of products and lowered prices for consumers
2. Continuing to reduce the power of trusts
- succeeded with the Clayton Antitrust Act and the development of the Federal Trade Commission
3. Giving the Govt. more control over the banking system
- succeeded with the establishment of the Federal Reserve System (still oversees our economy today!)
During Wilson's Presidency, 4 Amendments to the Constitution get passed. They include:
The 16th Amendment - allowed the national government to enact an income tax. (the main way the govt. gets $$$ today)
The 17th Amendment - allowed voters to elect U.S. Senators instead of State Congresses. (more power directly to people)
The 18th Amendment - prohibited alcohol. (made some women's and religious groups happy)
The 19th Amendment - gave women suffrage. (more power to half of the population)
To summarize, a lot was accomplished in the country during Wilson's presidency that still impacts how our country functions today. Much of his 2nd term was dominated by foreign policy events (especially World War I). We'll learn more about that in Chapter 11.
